Sloe Gin Recipe

Recipe is to make a 1 litre bottle of sloe gin; adjust the ingredients depending on your needs!

Ingredients

Half a litre of gin (needn’t be high quality)

Enough sloes to fill the other half litre

150g-250g caster sugar, depending on taste

Equipment

Decanter with lid, or 1 litre bottle with airtight sealed lid (with enough room in neck to push through sloes)

Fork or Pin

Method

1. Sterilise your bottles. Important!

2. This next bit is the most arduous. You’ll need to prick each individual sloe a few times with a sterilised needle, a cocktail stick or a cutlery fork. Be prepared for mess and lots of sloe juice. Once you’ve pricked through the skin of each sloe, plop it in the gin bottle. Do this until you’ve filled half the litre bottle. If like me, you’re a bit impatient, you could freeze the sloes and bash with a hammer or rolling pin.

3. Add sugar. 150g for sweetness, 250g+ for teeth rottingly sweet (but tasty) beverage.

4. Fill the rest of the bottle with your gin.

5. Seal the bottle and then give a good shake. Store in a cool, dry place. You’ll need to shake your fermenting sloe gin about once a day for the first week of fermentation. Then it’s just once a week for the remaining 8-10 weeks.

6. After 8-12 weeks, open, decant and enjoy the rosy glow. And remember, if you prefer to leave your sloes in the bottle, you’ve got around 6 months to finish your bottle of homebrewed sloe gin! If you opted for gin without sloes, you’ve got considerably longer.

Enjoy. I certainly will!

A Classic Strong Pale Ale, Landlord has won more awards nationally than any other beer: This includes four times as Champion at the Brewers’ International Exhibition and four times as CAMRA’s beer of the year.

Refreshingly reliable, nationally renowned, this full drinking Pale Ale with a complex and hoppy aroma has real “Pulling Power” and stands out in any bar as the ideal regular.

4.3% ABV

Wells Waggle Dance

Alcohol strength: Seasonal cask: 4%

Unusual name, unusual beer! The “Waggle Dance” is the movement a bee performs to alert the hive to a source of nectar. Wells Waggle Dance Beer is a beautifully balanced, sneakily seductive, golden coloured beer.

Pale ale, Crystal malts, British Fuggle and Golding hops, together with Fair Trade South American honey, combine perfectly to create this delicious golden beer with a superb honey aroma.

The brewery is situated in Harrogate, the Victorian spa town famous for its healing waters, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Daleside Brewery was established in the mid-1980s and moved to the present larger premises in 1992. In 1995 and 1999 further premises expansions took place and in June 2000 brewing was halted whilst new equipment was installed and the whole brewery re-organised.

Craig Witty joined the Company in 1991 and is now Head Brewer at Daleside Brewery. Daleside‘s beers, both real cask ales and premium-bottled beers, have achieved wide recognition repeatedly winning local, regional, national and international awards.

Eric Lucas joined the Company in 1993 and is now the Managing Director. Daleside supplies cask ales to the free trade in the UK and bottled beers to all the leading UK supermarkets. In addition Daleside beers are now finding markets abroad in the USA, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Sweden and Spain.

The use of the best quality malts, whole-leaf hops, Daleside’s own yeast, Harrogate water, the adoption of the full traditional brewing process together with the pride and expertise of the family tradition secure the high quality of Daleside Brewery’s beers.

Caledonian Oktoberbest 4.5% abv

An Oktoberfest, Marzen style beer brewed using the finest continental malt types and hops. Copper red ale with full bodied maltiness, a subtle dry and spicy hop finish.

Old Mill Brewery Fall Over 4.5% abv

Made from a complex of ale and rye malts, Challenger & First Gold hops makes this a delicious session beer, that just slips down.

Camerons 6th Sense 6.0% abv

6th Sense was named after the many ghost stories and legends surrounding the historic Camerons Brewery site which has been in Hartlepool since 1865. This award winning beer has a chestnut brown colour and delicate floral aroma finished off with a smooth malty taste.

Marstons Wicked Witch 4.7% abv

Brewed around the time of All Hallows’ eve. The recipe is a dark secret but eye of newt and wing of bat are hard to come by these days. A rich russet brown coloured beer with malt and hop flavours combining to make an autumnal delight with a warming character.

Adnams Ghost Ship 4.5% abv

Ghostly pale blonde and very hoppy. This beer has good assertive pithy bitterness with a malty backbone and lemon and lime aroma. Brewed with some Pale Ale malt, Crystal malt, Munich and some Wheat malt. Columbus and Chinook hops are used along with a new hop called Citra, responsible for adding great lime flavours.
