For the next year we will be raising money for the Queen Alexandra Hospital Home. We are very pleased to be supporting a very close neighbour and will bring further information about our fundraising ideas shortly.

General Info about The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH)

“Supporting our disabled Heroes since 1919”

• QAHH is a registered charity caring for people with physical and neurological disabilities, predominantly ex-Servicemen and women.
• We were established in 1919 to cope with the medical and surgical demand resulting from WWI, and now, 91 years on QAHH is still caring for World War Veterans, as well as residents who have suffered injury in more recent conflicts.
• Our residents range in age from 24 to 100 years old, and represent all three branches of the Armed Forces.
• Whether their disability was sustained in conflict, peace-keeping missions or is a result of an injury or illness sustained since leaving HM Armed Forces all former service personnel of all ages from any part of the country are welcome for both short-term respite and long-term residential care.
• Our residents have a variety of disabilities and conditions including loss of limb, Parkinson’s disease and MS. Some are paraplegic or tetraplegic and 90% are wheelchair users. We also have a special capability for the rehabilitation of residents with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI); a traumatic injury to the brain caused after birth.
• We provide a multi-disciplinary approach to the care of our residents with a strong focus on rehabilitation and helping residents regain lost skills with the aim that some (particularly younger residents) may someday return to living in the community. Services we provide include:

• Physiotherapy to aid mobility of disabled residents

• Occupational therapy to increase independence in daily living activities (e.g. cooking, dressing themselves, learning how to control their wheelchairs out in the local community).
• Speech therapy to teach those with communication difficulties techniques to make themselves understood
• Counselling
• Chaplaincy to care for residents’ spiritual needs
• An extensive programme of internal and external social and recreational activities including regular outings (recent and upcoming trips include London Eye, Isle of Wight, Millers Ark Farm, Lakeside Christmas shopping, Rugby at Twickenham).
• Inside the hospital home our social and recreational team put on a vast array of daily activities including crafts, games such as bingo and band practice all of which are designed to care for our residents emotional well-being – keep them active, happy and encourage participation and inclusion in spite of their disability.

• We are 1 of only 3 remaining establishments in the UK (and the only establishment south of London) helping to provide a home and vital care for some of the possible 400,000* deserving disabled ex-Service personnel. *Stats provided by RBL profile and needs of the Ex-Service community 2005-2020 Compass Partnership

We receive no government funding and must raise over £1million each year through fundraising efforts to provide our disabled Heroes with the quality of care, comfort and independence that they deserv

We are holding our first whiskey tasting evening on Thursday 16th September 2010, we have chosen the Dalmore and the Isle of Jura range for this event. The evening will commence with a tasting session and we will then serve a three course Scottish meal and all for the fantastic price of £12.95. Numbers are limited to a maximum of 20 people co please reserve you table promptly to avoid disappointment.

All profits from this evening will go to the Worthing Lions & Charles Dickens appeal fund 2010.

Our target for this year is £9000 this will purchase a puppy and allow for its training we very much hope that you will support us with our fund raising efforts throughout the year, if you have any ideas on ways we can raise money we would be pleased to hear your ideas.

On Thursday 28th January the Worthing Lions  presented the Motor cycle to the Bloodrunners. This was purchased with the monies raised throughout 2009 by the Charles Dickens and Worthing lions.
